By Northeast Music and Film Festival & Industry Conference (NXNE) |
| Toronto
Holiday Inn, Canada, June 6th 2003 |
| |
|
John
is asked to deliver the 'keynote speech' at the annual NXNE music
industry conference in Canada. Never the type for rehearsed speeches,
He improvises for over an hour giving an informal Q&A session
about the evils of the record industry; and whatever else comes
to mind... In his words, "a
nice friendly talk with 600 people".
Perhaps the most unlikely
person ever to be picked to speak about the music industry, or perhaps
the most obvious...
"Here we are at this
record company sponsored conference and my best advice is don't
trust the record company..."

The
Q Awards "Inspiration
Award" |
| London,
Park Lane Hotel, October 29th 2001 |
| |
What
was more unexpected? John actually accepting an Inspiration award
from the readers of Q Magazine for "for influencing
the music of today", or him turning up to receive it in a
rag-and-bone cart; then offering to give the award away? Always
expect the unexpected with Mr Lydon…
It's safe to say he
and his family and friends took over proceeding for the afternoon,
and certainly shook things up. The Q Awards had never seen
anything quite like a Rotten Entourage!

| Station
relaunch spots.
John Lydon is pleased
to lend his support to the relaunch of San
Diego radio station 91X. Although John does not present
a show for 91X, he has recorded various supportive voiceover's,
spots and quotes which the station is using throughout their programming.
“I am pleased and
pleasantly surprised that 91X – which used to be a stunningly
good radio station – is now going to be a stunningly good
radio station once again… I’ve had good bleedin’
memories with 91X and I’m telling you, it just might have
a chance to be as good as it once was.”
"At last a good radio
station, like it used to be. Rock on Baby…" |

Alice
Cooper: Billion Dollar Baby |
BBC
Radio 2
November 2nd
2000 |
| |
| One
hour Alice Cooper documentary narrated by John Lydon.
John Lydon is a huge
Alice Cooper fan, as well as narrating this documentary for the
BBC, he has also contributed sleevenotes
to the Alice Cooper box set.
"I know the words to every
Alice Cooper song. The fact is, if you can call what I have a musical
career, it all started with me miming to I'm Eighteen on a jukebox...
You can be influenced by people that excel, but you should never
copy. And that's why I made sure that the Pistols had a different
approach."

Rotten
Radio |
eYada.com
(now defunct)
December 1999 - August 2000 |
| |
| Weekly
(4 hour) internet "talk-radio" show for eYada.com, broadcast
from John's front room in LA; with the technology coming via the
eYada studios in New York.
'Rotten
Radio' was a "four hour free-for-all" where anybody
could phone or e-mail to talk about whatever they wanted.
The only aim of the show was free discussion. This wasn't a rock
star playing his fave records: there
were far more important things to talk about…
The content would change
from week to week – and with no censorship, or radio
regulations – John was free to talk about anything
he pleased: politics, social issues, football; music, technology,
or even just cracking jokes: anything!
During the course of
the show John also interviewed a variety of musicians, authors,
activists and politicians; often giving an unrestricted platform
to people who didn't normally get access to the mainstream media
or music press.
The show culminated with
John broadcasting live from the Democratic & Republican Party
Conventions in the run up to the Presidential Election: "Rotten
Politics!"

| A
daily 'diary' of rock n roll events, given the Rotten treatment...
"Johnny's version
of history... It never sounded so good!"
Syndicated weekday 2
minute 'This Day in Rock n Roll' segment broadcast throughout the
USA, voiced by John Lydon, and scripted by John Lydon & George
Gimarc. Loosely based on Gimarc's 'Punk Diary' books.
"May
6th 1991 and REM release 'Shiny Happy People', this song is sad,
so are you for buying it, and more shame on them. All round pathetic,
how can you tolerate that pap and tell me that these people care…"
"Wednesday, April the
10th 1962, and tragedy strikes The Beatles as they begin their career.
Original bassist, Stuart Sutcliffe dies in a hamburger, sorry in
Hamburg. Well, that's one down and four to go!"
"May the 17th Friday,
little short story for you, on this day in 1980 for no good reason
known to mankind, some complete wally had the no sense to ask Public
Image Ltd onto 'American Bandstand', absurd one would think, however
this odd ensemble of completely wasted out of their brains drunkards
turned up at the studio, the band absolutely failed to perform accurately,
it did their careers no good, but Dick Clarke some eight years later
actually had Public Image in the top eight of best performances
of all time!"
"Birthdays... OJ Simpson you are 49 and should not be..."
