Happy Birthday Q.
Congradulations from Mr Rotten!

Q Magazine June 2002: © Eva Vermandel 2002I just wanna say, in light of Q’s 20th Anniversary, well done lads. Decent publications are few and far between. And I want to know what ‘Q’ stands for. Is it Q off Star Trek? Q for question? Or is it a long queue of disassociated music fans!

This is basically a little note to say – that in a world of consistently bad reporting –  Q seems to rise above that sort of thing. I’m not saying it’s a 100%, but it’s a hell of a lot more accurate than anything else out there. It’s the pick of the bunch for me. There’s less bitterness in it, less jealousy, less angled motivations. I just get the distinct impression that you’re genuine music lovers, and I just love that.

It’s good to have a catalogue, basically, of records that you might not have, or have had your attention brought to. Of course, the problem is, sometimes it means having to adopt to a reviewer’s personal tastes. And that tends to get in my way. But it’s varied, it does cater for all tastes, so good luck to it. Variety is the spice of life. And to quote an old Doors song, ‘That’s what the Judge is gonna tell my Wife’.

As for the Lifetime Achievement Award – whoops, I mean ‘Inspiration Award’ – I don’t want it! I never did. But it was a good party. Thanks Q! Thanks a lot! It was just a nice excuse for a party, and I think we all knew it. But it does show that Q has some kind of understanding or respect of what drives culture, and it’s not just Top 30.

This is not a token gesture, it’s not meant for the refrigerator magnet collection, it’s heartfelt. I know when I see something I like. It’s all too easy to nag and nag, but it’s oh so hard to find something to praise! And it’s not just because you’ve said nice things to me, because you haven’t. I take the Jammy Dodgers with the donut. Have a cup of tea on me Q.

I have very few friends in the media that’s for certain. And for good reason. They’re liars. But Q I think have been reasonable. There’s been a few sarcastic comments, but I expect it. We’ve all got lawns, and we all get snakes in the grass.

I don’t know what else to say about it really… Except that, I’ve enjoyed being able to show off many an outfit in it over the years! I don’t believe in clothes rules – or music rules – and neither I think does your magazine.

Thank you Q. Well done. You’re an Orange in a world of Lemons.
